Grandma not Gaga for Gaga

Picture 2

This is a direct transcription of Cutie’s response to watching Lady Gaga’s latest video, “Alejandro.”

You want me to review this? Throw it away and start shooting all over again. It had no continuation, it had no charm, it had no storyline. It’s just a bunch of stuff, mostly cuts from the 1930s. I think it’s nothing new, it’s nothing charming. It’s got no message. I’m sorry, I did not enjoy this. It was a take off of flappers. But flappers were more consistent and more fun. This was not fun. I think she doesn’t come across with reaching the public emotionally. She’s just — there.

[Cutie, did you find the imagery shocking?] Shocked? I’m annoyed. She was a waste of my time. I’m sorry, maybe the whole world thinks she’s great, and people who know talent will recognize what she has got to offer. She isn’t doing anything new. It’s the same thing that we have seen, only take offs.

[Cutie, do you have some constructive criticism for Lady Gaga?] Sure. Lady Gaga, get yourself a good agent and go to school and get some talent! What? I think that’s constructive criticism!

[UPDATE: Later, Cutie hopes she hasn’t hurt Lady Gaga’s feelings, and sends her a personal message, which you can see at https://www.the-ogs.local/messagetogaga ]

Oh Harry, Oh Harry – How you can love.

Oh Harry, Oh Harry. How you can Love.

Oh Harry, Oh Harry, How you can Love. Oh Harry, Oh Harry heaven above. My mother wants to know just when you and I can get together and so so. So Harry, So Harry, How about it? That’s what it’s all about. We can Something or other and something or other. Oh Harry, Oh Harry. How I love you so.

I used to sing that song when I was very, very young. I think originally it was an American song. It was Oh Johnny, Oh Johnny, How you can Love. The Whole world seems to shine.I don’t remember how to make it rhyme. Oh Johnny, I love you so…

I just sang this song to Harry when I looked at this picture of us at our old house. Just to show you I’m holding on to the right guy.

An open message from Barbara to all her old friends:

Cutie in polka dots

It’s been exciting to hear from the past. So many years have passed. Harry and I are doing well. We talk about the past, that’s all. We can’t even follow through with phone calls but we are so delighted to hear from whoever has the time to give the old folks a call.

I think of you often, especially when we run across old photos of the past. All the things of the Torch years and the City of Hope and how much we had together. Those days are in our memories solid forever. I hope your families are well. My children are gone but I have seven wonderful wonderful grandchildren and they have tried to make up for those that are gone. However we are happy with what we have. Harry and I are well and we wish you all a very good year.

And thank you for keeping us in your memory and it’s nice hearing from you. Good year and a happy happy life.

Love happy Barbara and Harry Cooper

The OGs do Twohey’s (and Cutie makes the Angry Grandma Face)

The OGs recently discovered a Southern California culinary landmark, Alhambra’s beloved Twoheys, home of the Little Stinko burger.

Let’s drop in on them at the end of their first visit, as an ice cream concoction called a Red Car arrives at the table. What will Cutie, who doesn’t usually like chocolate ice cream and always watches her waistline, think of this cornucopia of sweetness that’s bigger than her head? Will PopPop share? Can you stand the suspense?

This episode features a special bonus, as Cutie makes the Angry Grandma face after the grandchildren beg and plead. (Don’t worry, she isn’t really angry.)

See Your Dentist!

It can be scary going to see the dentist, even for a routine check up, but with grandma along for the ride, grandchild Chinta discovers it can be an adventure and bonding experience.

Along the way, Cutie offers some oral health wisdom obtained over nine decades, and records a couple of Public Service Announcements. Grandpa Harry proves to be less encouraging, though his obsessive tooth brushing is a habit to be emulated — at 98 years old, he still has most of his own teeth.

So join us as we head out to the dentist’s office, with our favorite sassy sidekick, Cutie!

ShalomLife loves the OGs

The OGs have given a rare written interview to the website ShalomLife. Check out their insights on LA then-and-now, the secrets of a happy marriage, family and fun, and learn why interviewer Christal Gardiola says “But don’t let their almost-triple-digit ages fool you. Barbara and Harry are about as hip as any Tweeting-Facebook-using-20-somethings.”

PopPop’s 98th Birthday

The OGs are L.A.’s oldest bloggers, and they just got a little older as PopPop turned a spry 98-years-young with a swinging, music-filled party at his favorite Boyle Heights restaurant, La Parrilla.

When Harry Cooper was born in Philadelphia on April 5, 1912, it was a different world. Arizona and New Mexico had just been admitted to the union, the Girl Scouts of America were newly formed, the first parachutist had recently jumped out of an airplane, the gardeners of Washington DC were tending a gift of 3000 young cherry trees from Japan, supplies were being laid in for the maiden voyage of the Titanic…. and Boyle Heights was a Jewish neighborhood!

Who could have predicted that the wee baby of 1912 would be a star on the internet in the 21st Century?

Here’s to Harry Cooper, and his loving wife Barbara who keeps him young and happy, on the occasion of his 98th birthday (give or take a few hours)!

The OGs’ Message to Mayor Villaraigosa: Save LAPL!

The OGs are L.A.’s oldest bloggers, and now that their eyesight isn’t what it used to be, their daily dose of literature comes when their granddaughter reads from their favorite Mark Twain books. But for most of their lives Barbara and Harry Cooper always had a book (or in Harry’s case, a National Geographic) close at hand.

They passed the love of reading on to their children and grandchildren, so when the Los Angeles Public Library was in trouble, one of those grandchildren created the www.SaveLAPL.org website to get the word out to the Mayor and City Council how much the community cares about their libraries. Just one click sends an email message to everyone who will decide if LAPL is funded or gutted next year.

In this episode, Barbara and Harry discuss the current city budget crisis and how it effects the library, and Barbara gives Mayor Villaraigosa a piece of her still-nimble-at-93 mind. Listen up, city fathers: this grandma knows a thing or two about good government! So get to work and Save LAPL, and you’ll have two votes in Boyle Heights next election time.
